Crisis, opportunity and Europe – in favour of democracy and theexpansion of economic strength

The world, and Europe in particular, is facing fundamental changes. Donald Trump’s presidency has already brought about noticeable changes and new political and economic challenges in transatlantic relations and global trade.

With US Vice President Vance’s speech, the Munich Security Conference once again provided a platform for fundamental questions about the values and institutions of Western democracies.

In a time of multiple crises – climate change, geopolitical tensions, economic uncertainty – these values are coming under increasing pressure. Support for traditional institutions and parties is dwindling, while populist and libertarian movements are gaining influence.

However, crises are always a great opportunity to break new ground. Europe must join forces. Europe’s particular strength lies in small and medium-sized enterprises and their customers. The European states must now act more confidently towards all players on the world stage. Europe must respond with closer co-operation with other partners. However, we will all also be confronted with new challenges, both politically and economically.
